چکیده

Atomic spectroscopy is fundamental to study of astronomical objects for their formation, evolution, composition, physical conditions etc. Information are extracted from the spectral analysis of the electromagnetic radiation emitted by these objects. This article will focus on the study of X-ray radiation which is used as a powerful diagnostic for astrophysical plasmas, particularly those surrounding black holes. There are space observatories, such as Chandra, XMM-Newton, dedicated in measuring the X-ray emissions in astronomical objects. The knowledge of Xray astronomy is very similar to that used in cancer treatment in medical facilities. Using this connection, we have formulated a new method, Resonant Nano-Plasma Theranostics or RNPT, which gives indication for one most efficient way for destruction of malignant cells.

Multi-Disciplinary Role of Atomic Astrophysics: From Stellar Interiors to Cancer Research Via Nanotechnology

We discuss the application of atomic physics to two diverse topics: Astrophysical opacities that determine the flow of radiation through the interior of stars, and biomedical research using nanotechnology for novel methodologies for cancer diagnostics and therapy (theranostics). Recent determination of solar abundances suggests that a re-examination of the absolute accuracy of these opacities m...

Monte Carlo simulations and atomic calculations for Auger processes in biomedical nanotheranostics.

We present numerical simulations of X-ray emission and absorption in a biological environment for which we have modified the general-purpose computer code Geant4. The underlying mechanism rests on the use of heavy nanoparticles delivered to specific sites, such as cancerous tumors, and treated with monoenergetic X-rays at resonant atomic and molecular transitions. X-ray irradiation of high-Z at...

Broadband and Monochromatic X-ray Irradiation of Platinum: Monte Carlo Simulations for Dose Enhancement Factors and Resonant Theranostics

Introduction: X-ray irradiation of heavy-element (high-Z) nanomaterials as radiosensitizing agents should be extremely efficient for therapy and diagnostics (theranostics). However, broadband radiation from conventional X-ray sources results in unnecessary radiation exposure. Monochromatic X-ray sources are expected to be considerably more efficient. We present numerical simulations with platin...

Resonant X-ray enhancement of the Auger effect in high-Z atoms, molecules, and nanoparticles: potential biomedical applications.

It is shown that X-ray absorption can be considerably enhanced at resonant energies corresponding to K-shell excitation into higher shells with electron vacancies following Auger emissions in high-Z elements and compounds employed in biomedical applications. We calculate Auger resonant probabilities and cross sections to obtain total mass attenuation coefficients with resonant cross sections an...

Detection of breast cancer using non-invasive X-ray diffraction technique of hair: A preliminary study

Background: An early diagnosis of breast cancer relates directly to an accurate treatment plan and strategy. Early detection of breast cancer before its development would be a significant reduction of morbidity and mortality rates. The aim of this preliminary study is to investigate the sensitivity of Wide Angle X-ray diffraction (WAXRD) method on women hair samples of healthy and breast cancer...
